UHSAA Sanctions Lacrosse

For Immediate Release - Utah Lacrosse Chapter

SALT LAKE CITY - May 4, 2017 - The Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) Board of Trustees approved a motion on Thursday to make boys and girls lacrosse a sanctioned sport with overwhelming approval.

“We’re thrilled this has come to fruition,” said Craig Morris, who along with Renee Tribe, Brae Burbidge and Brian Barnhill, have spent the last 2 years working with the UHSAA. “If you look at every state where lacrosse has been sanctioned, the sport has grown.”

It is anticipated that sanctioned play will begin in the 2019-20 season which will coincide with the next round of high school alignment proposals. The timeline will also give schools time to prepare to field teams.

“The support of the UHSAA was great today, now we roll up our sleeves as a community and help our school administrators,” said Burbidge.

With the announcement, the chapter continues to encourage high school programs to work in a positive manner with school administrations and all those involved in the community.

“We applaud the UHSAA for recognizing the number of schools and student-athletes that are participating in lacrosse,” said Tribe. “Lacrosse isn’t going away. This is a big win for the students who can participate in education-based activities.”
